Canberrans will benefit from the ongoing modernisation of the Canberra Hospital with the release of a 20-year Master Plan providing a blueprint for the transformation of the Canberra Hospital campus to meet the community’s growing needs.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the Master Plan reflects a shared vision of the Canberra Hospital campus following extensive community and stakeholder consultation.
“The Master Plan shows how Canberra Hospital will evolve into a world leading and sustainable health facility – a place of healing and wellbeing for patients, carers, families and visitors that delivers exceptional healthcare for our region, and training and research opportunities for the expanding workforce,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“Building on the almost $1.3 billion in healthcare infrastructure the ACT Government has invested over the past decade, the Master Plan recognises what is working well on the campus and what is valued by the community.
“This Plan will see ongoing transformation of the campus through staged investments into the hospital with a focus on open spaces, parking, public transport access and wayfinding.
“With 28 buildings on the site, the Canberra Hospital campus is a complex place. The Master Plan breaks the campus down to seven separate precincts, based on current and future uses.
“This approach will enable redevelopment to continue without disrupting the vital services Canberra Hospital provides to residents of the ACT and surrounding region, as the only tertiary referral hospital between Sydney and Melbourne.”
The seven precincts outlined in the Canberra Hospital Master Plan are:
- Acute Hospital Precinct
- Women and Children’s Precinct
- Gateway Precinct
- Yamba Precinct/staff multi-level carpark
- Mental Health Precinct
- Accommodation Precinct
- Training, Research and Innovation Precinct
“We understand how important the Canberra Hospital is to the community and will continue to develop the campus over the next two decades so that it meets the needs of the community while also providing a better, more accessible user experience,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
