McGowan Government commits additional $5 million to support East Fremantle Oval redevelopment

  • A further $5 million secured to deliver major McGowan Government election commitment
  • State Government’s total contribution to the project is now $25 million
  • Works scheduled for completion by the end of 2023 ahead of the 2024 WAFL season
  • The East Fremantle Oval redevelopment will proceed as planned thanks to a further $5 million contribution from the McGowan Government.

The redevelopment was expected to cost $26.5 million when the election commitment was made last year but has since increased to $32.5 million due to current market conditions and the rise in construction costs.

Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman today announced the State’s additional contribution to achieve the integrated facility and to deliver the project in line with the intent of the election commitment.

The State Government’s total contribution to the project is now $25 million, with the Town of East Fremantle contributing the remaining funding and undertaking further planning, design and value management to reduce the project cost as much as possible.

The project includes a redeveloped playing surface for the football oval and floodlighting, new synthetic bowling green, unisex change rooms, redeveloped playgroup and child nursing facilities for East Freo Playgroup, dog exercise area, skate zone, community gardens, commercial gym, and new shared facility with café, bar, kitchen and function rooms.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“The State Government remains committed to seeing the East Fremantle Oval redevelopment through to its full potential.

“Unfortunately, the significant rise in construction costs is being felt right across Western Australia’s building and construction industry and this project is no exemption.

“Providing local sporting clubs and the community with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant community hub is the key objective, and I am pleased the State can continue to support the delivery of this important project.”

As stated by Bicton MLA Lisa O’Malley:

“This is fantastic news for the local community and I am so pleased that the McGowan Government has been able to step in and fund the increase.

“I have been working with the Town of East Fremantle and the Government on solutions and it is wonderful that both parties have been able to ensure the project stays on track.”

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

“East Fremantle Oval is at the heart of the local community, and this additional funding means the vision for its redevelopment can be realised.

“It’s wonderful the State Government is in a position to commit the extra funds, so footy fans can enjoy the upgraded facilities well into the future.”
