We are measuring how successful we have been delivering our strategy for the 2023 Census against the following key performance indicators (KPIs).

1. This is the only KPI that changed in the course of delivering the census,
by two months, to reflect the two-month extension to the census collection period.

2. Confirmed by the Post-enumeration Survey, which happens after the 2023 Census.

3. The second release of census data is planned for 3 October 2024.

2023 Census strategy

Our mission for the 2023 Census is to rebuild trust and confidence in census and deliver quality data to our customers. To achieve this, we have prioritised census design around four strategic initiatives that reflect:

  • Stats NZ’s overall strategy – About Aotearoa, for Aotearoa, Data that improves lives today and for generations to come
  • the 2023 Census mission – Re-build trust and confidence and deliver quality data to our customers.

  • communicating about our progress.

Build trust and value for Māori through data equity

Enabled by:

  • building capacity and capability for iwi-Māori
  • collaborating with iwi-Māori to deliver quality data
  • establishing co-design partnerships.
