Melbourne named Australia’s top ranked student city

Melbourne has been named Australia’s top ranked student city – and third best in the world – in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Best Student Cities Ranking 2019.

Higher education consultancy QS placed Melbourne behind London and Tokyo in the global rankings, with only two Australian cities placing within the Top 10.

Chair of the City of Melbourne’s International Engagement portfolio, Councillor Philip Le Liu, said the ranking reinforced Melbourne’s position as a desirable place to live, work and study.

“The City of Melbourne is proud of its reputation for offering world-leading higher education facilities and a lifestyle attractive for both national and international students,” Cr Le Liu said.

“Thousands of students from a broad range of backgrounds and countries choose Melbourne every year to study and forge their future. At the City of Melbourne we work hard to ensure everyone feels welcome and is afforded the best study opportunities.”

The QS global rankings rates cities across six metrics: the number and performance of their universities, the extent to which employers are actively hiring, the city’s affordability, the city’s desirability and quality of life, and the diversity of a city’s student body.

The QS rankings also incorporate feedback from over 87,000 current and prospective international students.

Cr Le Liu said the QS rankings show Melbourne is on the right track, but there is always more we can do.

“Moving forward we will continue to work closely with our major universities and higher education partners to ensure Melbourne remains a world leading study city,” Cr Le Liu said.
