Mining industry meets to accelerate net zero emissions target

  • Inaugural conference provides platform to showcase industry decarbonisation efforts
  • Whole-of-government approach to support industry net zero emissions by 2050
  • Western Australia’s mining sector will meet tomorrow (October 13) at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre for the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia’s (MRIWA) inaugural Net Zero Emission Mining conference.

    With a global shift towards decarbonisation, the need for mineral resources to support the energy transition places Western Australia at the forefront of a significant economic opportunity.

    More than 120 delegates are expected to attend to discuss how they can reduce their carbon footprint, lower energy costs and improve energy efficiency.

    The McGowan Government is supporting the sector by:

    allocating an additional $6 million in funding for MRIWA over the next four years to continue to support minerals research;

    committing $1 million to investigate the viability of a local green steel industry in WA; and

    establishing an Energy Industry Development team to work with local renewable energy manufacturers and mining companies to accelerate the transition to renewable energy supply on remote mine sites.

    As stated by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:

    “Western Australia is a unique State with a world-class mining industry.

    “We already have the capacity and mineral reserves to supply the resources used for wind and solar energy generation; electric vehicles; and battery storage systems.

    “Positioning Western Australia as a world-leader in net zero emission mining will ensure we continue to be a preferred global supplier and a sought-after investment destination.”
