Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston today officially opened BHP’s upgraded and expanded Mulla Mulla village in the Pilbara.
Located 130km north-west of Newman, the $150 million upgrade for the village sets a new standard of camp living for BHP’s construction and operational workforce.
The expansion has added an extra 2,000 rooms, 30 laundries and includes new recreational facilities including: virtual golf, squash and tennis courts, a swimming pool, a CrossFit gym and sports field.
There is also a three-storey café, masterclass cooking demonstration kitchen, music stage, library and barbeque gazebos.
Mulla Mulla initially housed approximately 500 workers for BHP’s local operations, which opened in 2003, now up to 2,500 construction workers are expected to be housed at the village for its South Flank iron ore project.
The South Flank project will expand existing infrastructure at Mining Area C, and involves construction of an 80 million tonnes per annum crushing and screening plant, an overland conveyor system, stockyard and train loading facilities, mine development and pre-strip work.
As stated by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:
“I’d like to congratulate BHP on the opening of this excellent new facility, which I’m sure the residents will enjoy.
“The South Flank project will create up to 2,500 construction jobs and 600 operational roles once production commences in 2021.
“Creating jobs is the McGowan Government’s number one priority and we are fully supportive of mining companies, such as BHP, that are generating jobs for Western Australians.”
