Minister visits upgraded facilities at Southern River College

  • $8.4 million upgrade to learning areas at Southern River College in Gosnells
  • Final works to be completed early next year
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today toured the new world-class gymnasium and sporting facilities at Southern River College.

Construction began in January of this year, with final works to be completed in early 2020.

The $8.4 million upgrades focused on the construction of a new sports hall, STEM laboratory, multiple sports courts, as well as upgrades to a performing arts space, lecture theatre and science laboratories.

The school’s centre for its specialist autism program also underwent a $250,000 centre upgrade in late 2018.

Students now have state-of-the-art facilities to put their sporting, performing and scientific skills to the test, with the upgrades putting Southern River College on the map for future students.

This is part of a $453 million State Government investment package into Western Australian schools in 2019-20 alone, to improve public infrastructure in public schools and create jobs.

A further $650,000 has been allocated for planned maintenance work, with checks on roof safety, structural integrity and safety compliance.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Thanks to these fantastic upgrades, students at Southern River College now have the space to let their physical, intellectual and artistic talents shine.

“From 2020 onwards, Southern River College will be one of the many recently upgraded schools in Western Australia that will provide students with every opportunity to learn and succeed in whatever they do.”

As stated by Southern River MLA Terry Healy:

“As a former teacher at Southern River College, I am proud to be part of a Government that is delivering these much needed facilities that our local students deserve.

“We continue to deliver on our promises to our local students.

“This adds to the additional Education Assistants allocated to local schools, the opening of Southern Grove Primary School with construction commencing on another Southern River Primary School in 2020, the new science lab at Ashburton Drive Primary School, the $2 million upgrade at Canning Vale College and the halving of TAFE fees in 2020 for a number of courses.”
