More arrests over brawl at football at Rockdale, NSW

Detectives have today made a further two arrests as the investigation continues into a brawl at a sporting event at Rockdale on the weekend.

Police were called to a sports field on West Botany Street, Rockdale, just after 5pm on Sunday (25 April 2021), after a brawl broke out between spectators at a soccer match.

When officers from St George Police Area Command and the Public Order and Riot Squad (PORS) arrived, the crowd started to disperse.

Three men were taken to St George Hospital suffering minor injuries. Police have been told the men were armed with metal star pickets, bricks, flares and plastic crates.

Strike Force Azure was formed to investigate the incident and, following inquiries, a 23-year-old man was charged with being armed with intent to commit indictable offence, and riot.

The Granville man remains before the courts.

Following further inquiries, detectives arrested two men yesterday (Tuesday 27 April 2021).

The men, aged 22 and 31, were taken to Fairfield Police Station where they were both charged with riot, and affray.

Both men were given conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 18 May 2021.

About 11.20am today (Wednesday 28 April 2021), detectives arrested a 17-year-old boy and took him to Kogarah Police Station where he was charged with common assault. Detectives will allege in court the teen entered the field and assaulted one of the players. He’s been granted conditional bail to appear at a children’s court on Wednesday 26 May 2021.

A 22-year-old man was also today arrested at St George Police Station, where he was charged with riot, and affray. He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 25 May 2021.

Investigations by strike force detectives are continuing.
