More campsites for Litchfield

Territorians have more options for camping, with a Litchfield favourite completing its expansion.

Works on new campsites at Surprise Creek Falls have finished faster than anticipated, with 12 new sites ready just in time for the school holidays, bringing the total campsites to 19.

More than $300,000 has been invested to create the new sites, allowing for better visitor dispersion around Litchfield National Park, and taking some pressure off other popular spots like Wangi Falls.

Each site will be approximately 9-13 metres deep and 8-11 metres wide, with facilities such as barbeque/fire pit, packed hard stands for vehicles and picnic tables.

The new campsites are spaced away from the original sites to maintain the essence of bush camping.

Nearly 2.6km of connecting tracks have also been created, while the new camping sites will be serviced by two pit toilets located convenient to sites.

The additional camping facilities at Surprise Creek Falls are a direct result of visitor feedback leading to formal park planning.

Surprise Creek Falls is one of the more isolated campgrounds in Litchfield National Park and is loved by locals for the 4WD access and a series of rock pools.

High clearance 4WD is required for access, as the Reynolds Track is for experienced drivers only.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Parks and Rangers, Nicole Manison:

“We know locals and visitors love camping at Litchfield and will love these upgrades.

“This has been another bumper season for our Parks, with Territorians and tourists all making the most of our incredible natural landscapes over the Dry Season.

“Investments like these in our campgrounds and facilities allow for campers to better spread out across our Parks and improve the visitor experience.

“The majority of campgrounds in Litchfield National Park, including Central Valley and Wangi Falls, have been booked close to capacity for the Dry Season.

“There are some spaces available after this weekend for both weekends and weekdays, making it a great time to get out and enjoy our Parks during the holidays, before the end of the Dry.”
