More Tasmanians going under with water debt 18 June 2023

New information released by the Economic Regulator shows the number of Tasmanians paying a water debt has continued to grow, with more than 5,000 Tasmanians now paying an average debt of more than $1,300 each.

The same report showed that TasWater’s underlying profit doubled to $31.9 million in 2021-22 from $16.3 million in 2020-21.

As we’ve seen with power, and now water, Tasmanians are being ripped off under this Liberal Government. TasWater prices are going up because that’s what its Memorandum of Understanding with the Liberal Government demanded.

One of the projects the Liberals demanded TasWater undertake – paid for by rising water bills – was the Macquarie Point treatment plant relocation. But five years later, absolutely nothing has happened. We don’t even know what the project will cost, let alone when it will be done.

After ten years of Liberal Government, Tasmanians are getting crushed by rising utilities bills, and Premier Jeremy Rockliff isn’t doing nearly enough to help them.
