More than 20 people have been arrested following an unauthorised protest at Port Botany overnight.

On Tuesday 21 November 2023, police were made aware of planned unauthorised protest activity at Port Botany.

As a result, a police operation commenced about 6pm, including officers from Operation Shelter, Central Metropolitan Region, Eastern Beaches Police Area Command, and other specialist police units – including the Public Order and Riot Squad and the Mounted Unit.

Approximately 400 people gathered near the boat ramp at Foreshore Road, before the group moved towards the intersection of Sirius and Foreshore Roads.

Police issued a group move on direction, which was not complied with. The group continued to occupy Foreshore Road, blocking vehicle movement.

Foreshore Road was subsequently closed in both directions, as police continued to issue move on directions to several members of the group.

After a number of people continued to refuse police direction, 23 people were arrested before all people left the roadway about 9pm.

All 23 people were taken to several police stations, where they were charged with the offences of fail to comply with move on direction and damage or disruption to a major facility.

Inquiries into this incident continue under Operation Shelter.
