The Marshall Liberal Government will train more than 2,600 apprentices and trainees over four years under a new public sector Skilling South Australia project.
Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said the significant training program will provide new training opportunities for more young South Australians, while also increasing the opportunity to upskill or reskill existing staff.
“This program will ensure more South Australians are equipped with the skills and experience required to advance their careers and will provide industry and employers with the skilled workforce they need to grow,” Minister Pisoni said.
“The project will broaden apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities across the South Australian Public Sector in key areas of skills demand such as Allied Health, Child Protection, Education Support, Horticulture, Clinical Coding and Cyber Security.
“The Office of the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment will partner with a Group Training Organisation to support the implementation of the program.
“Apprentices and trainees will be provided with on-job experience, training and mentoring support, and a formal qualification from a RTO to kickstart their careers.
“The project is part of the State Government’s Skilling South Australia initiative to create 20,800 additional apprenticeships and traineeships over four years.
“We are addressing the decline we have inherited in apprentice and trainee commencements in South Australia which have fallen by 53.6 per cent since 2013.
“Our whole of government training target as part of Skilling South Australia is a key part of lifting the profile and status of apprenticeships and traineeships and will significantly enhance skills development in the state.
“Growing training and employment opportunities for more South Australians is a major priority for the Marshall Liberal Government.”
Commissioner for Public Sector Employment Erma Ranieri said as the state’s largest employer, the public sector has a key role to help build rewarding careers for South Australians.
“Finding avenues to employment for South Australians is important – whether it be our youth, Aboriginal people or people with disability – it increases our diversity and reinforces the public sector’s role in providing and promoting skills and training opportunities, for our state,” Ms Ranieri said.
“As part of this signature training project Aboriginal people are being encouraged with targeted support into public sector traineeships over two years.”
