The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) today announced that the consultation period for the Draft Murramarang South Coast Walk Master Plan and Draft Review of Environmental Factors has been extended by two weeks until Sunday 23 August, given the current coronavirus restrictions and impacts from the east coast low weather event.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) wants to ensure the community has ample opportunity to give feedback on the draft master plan and draft review of environmental factors.
“The aim of this project is to create a multiday signature walk to attract new visitors to the NSW South Coast during off-peak periods. Walkers can either stay overnight at existing hard-roofed accommodation and camping areas managed by NPWS, or alternatively tourist accommodation provided in the coastal communities,” said NPWS South Coast Director Kane Weeks.
“The project will upgrade existing coastal walking trails and create new connecting sections so walkers can traverse the length of Murramarang National Park and Murramarang Aboriginal Area. The trail will also traverse the beaches that connect the coastal villages of Maloneys Beach, Durras, Depot Beach, Kioloa and Bawley Point,” Mr Weeks said.
“NPWS has been working with Eurobodalla Shire Council and Shoalhaven City Council to enhance nature-based tourism while supporting local economies during the off-peak season,” he said.
“Following engagement with Aboriginal community representatives, bushwalkers, environmental conservation organisations and tourism bodies, we know that this project has high interest from local communities,” he said.
“NPWS will be hosting a series of small meetings with representatives from key stakeholder groups, through COVID Safe practices that include phone and video consultation. Feedback on the Draft Master Plan and Draft Review of Environmental Factors gathered during public consultation will help ensure that the walk is delivered to the highest standard,” he said.
This $3.64 million project is funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund. Some construction is anticipated to commence in 2020.
