Murray River Council has awarded $11,000 in heritage funding to help with the maintenance and upkeep of local heritage properties.

The program endeavours to support the community in their efforts to preserve heritage items within the council.

With a total of $11,000 available under the grants round, four applications were received, seeking a total of $23,400.

Three applications were deemed successful under the 2020/21 program.

The Moama Cemetery Working Group was awarded $1,300 under the program for the next stage of development of the Moama Cemetery Path of Remembrance.

The overall project includes the installation of a series of plinths and plaques, each bearing the name and date of death of persons who were buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves, supporting the ongoing efforts to build upon the town’s local history.

Cummeragunja Local Aboriginal Land Council were awarded $7,000 for repairs and maintenance to the Old School Building, including painting, and repairs to bearers.

The Pastoral Hotel, located in Mathoura’s main street, will also receive a facelift thanks to $2,700 of funding.

This particular building is listed on Council’s Heritage Schedule.

The project aims to preserve the building’s character and restore it to its original state by painting it in appropriate heritage colours.

Murray River Council mayor, Cr Chris Bilkey said the three projects are important heritage projects within the area.

“These initiatives will enhance key items in our rich collection of historical sites, buildings and artefacts located in the council area.”

“It’s pleasing that these works can now go ahead, and we can continue to preserve our history for current and future generations to enjoy,” he said.
