19 government schools and preschools across the state are set to benefit from Round 1 of grant funding from the Music Innovation Fund, which aims to create more opportunities for South Australian children to participate in music education.
In addition to purchasing new instruments such as saxophones, flutes, guitars and percussion sets, successful applicants are using their share of funding to support new music programs, upskill teachers and make music more accessible to children and young people of all abilities.
The Music Innovation Fund, a Marshall Liberal Government initiative that forms part of the Music Education Strategy, is making more than $500,000 available for government schools and preschools, as well as music and creative industries and music organisations.
Applications for Round 2 of funding opened this week and will close on Friday 11 October.
Education Minister John Gardner said the Music Innovation Fund provides an opportunity for schools to engage children in music from an early age.
“Investment in high quality music education brings many educational benefits for our children and young people,” said Minister Gardner.
“This fund enables access to quality music education which supports and reinforces the development of literacy, language and other academic skills in children and young people. It is also a critical enabler of social development and emotional wellbeing.
“By investing in innovative practices, partnerships and programs we are supporting government schools and preschools to create and sustain quality music programs across the state.
“We’ve been very impressed with the first round of applications and we hope they inspire other potential applicants to put their ideas forward.”
