An exhibition celebrating local Indigenous people who have contributed to the local community will kick off a huge week of celebrations to mark Orange NAIDOC Week from Friday 28 October to Saturday 5 November.
The Orange Regional Museum will feature a photographic exhibition of local Indigenous community members who have achieved in a range of fields, from science and arts to sports and culture.
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for people of all walks of life to learn and celebrate the oldest, continuing culture on the planet.
Orange NAIDOC Week Community Committee Chairperson, Deputy Mayor Gerald Power said NAIDOC’s week provides an important opportunity for the community to connect and engage with
each other in a meaningful way.
”The 2022 NAIDOC theme is Get up! Stand up! Show up! – We must all continue to stand up and keep working to raise awareness about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements” Cr Power said.
”While COVID-19 impacted the previous celebrations, this year is the time to connect with each other and celebrate the heroes who led change over generations. Each celebration makes an important contribution to communities across Orange.”
A total of 12 events will be held, with 2 major events:
- A street march from Sale Street along Summer Street to Robertson Park will open this festive
week on Monday 31st of October.
- The NAIDOC Community Awards Night will be held on Saturday 5 November. The event will
celebrate and acknowledge our local achievers and conclude the 2022 NAIDOC celebrations.
”I encourage households and families to participate and engage in the events. There is an activity for everyone. From an exhibition to a night out to a family fun day; it’s the perfect occasion to celebrate and show up for the community.”
”This year’s theme is calling on everyone to play a part in driving effective change. It is a great opportunity for non-Aboriginal people to be involved, learn and celebrate together during the festivities.”
The events are organised by the local Aboriginal community in conjunction with Orange City Council and are proudly supported by Orange City Council.
