$4.7 billion National Cabinet package welcomed
6 September 2024
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has welcomed National Cabinet’s $4.7 billion package over five years to end gender-based violence.
In Canberra for her first National Cabinet meeting, Mrs Finocchiaro reiterated to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and her state and territory counterparts, that domestic and family violence was a serious issue in the Territory and today’s funding partnership announcement represented an important first step.
“I impressed upon the Prime Minister and my fellow state and territory first ministers that this is a critical issue in the NT, and a business as usual per capita formula won’t cut it for Territorians,” she said.
“I will be working to negotiate the NT’s fair share of this funding given our significant over representation in domestic violence statistics.
“My government is investing an additional $180 million over five years, but we can’t solve this issue alone.”
Ms Finocchiaro said community safety was a high priority for her newly elected CLP government.
“This includes keeping women and children safe and supporting police and other frontline services to reduce crime, including domestic violence,” she said.
“I look forward to further discussions with the Prime Minster, including to pilot a Domestic Violence Threat Assessment Centre and intelligence sharing capability aligned with our existing comprehensive police responses for community safety to protect women and children from harm.”
