NDS launches Trauma Informed Support films

National Disability Services (NDS) today launched a new series of animated Trauma-Informed Support films as part of the highly regarded NDS Zero Tolerance Initiative.

Zero Tolerance is an initiative led by NDS in partnership with the disability sector to assist disability service providers to understand, implement and improve practices, which safeguard the rights of people they support.

Evidence shows that people with disability continue to be at greater risk of traumatic experiences, including neglect, abuse and violence, than people without disability.

Trauma Informed Support is an evidence based, therapeutic approach, which recognises signs and symptoms of trauma, enables pathways for recovery and actively seeks to avoid re-traumatisation.

Trauma-informed principles and practice are increasingly considered and implemented across a wide range of services in Australia and internationally.

NDS CEO, David Moody said, “The disability sector and wider community have a responsibility to ensure that people with disability can live their lives safely.”

“These films have been developed to support workers and providers to build greater awareness of trauma informed approaches to supporting people with disability.”

The films are freely available on the NDS website and cover topics including:

  • What is Trauma?
  • What is Trauma Informed Support?
  • A Trauma Informed approach to Positive Behaviour Support
  • How can Organisations Embed a Trauma Informed Approach?
  • Building networks of support and recognising vicarious trauma

Developed with funding from the Victorian Government, the films are the first of their kind developed specifically for the disability sector.
