New $2.4 billion health reform agreement for Tasmania

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Health

The Tasmanian Government welcomes the new health reform agreement with the Morrison Government, enabling public hospitals in Tasmania access to record funding for the next five years.

The Federal Government funding contribution for public hospital services in Tasmania is estimated to grow substantially to an estimated $2.4 billion under the new agreement, delivering an additional $400 million in funding.

This funding is crucial as we work to deliver better health care to all Tasmanians during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Under this agreement there will also be:

  • More flexible care, including hospital care in the home, to give patients care where and when they need it;
  • Greater collaboration between the State and Commonwealth in responding to COVID-19; and
  • A minimum funding guarantee to provide certainty for the health budget over the next five years.

This is further demonstration of our very strong relationship with the Federal Government, which secured the $730 million deal to support the Mersey Community Hospital and the $92 million Tasmanian Health Plan.

We know there have been significant challenges placed on our health system and that’s why we’ve invested $8.1 billion over four years and an additional $600 million earlier this year to meet these demands on our hospitals.

We believe this further $400 million will help us strive to deliver the best possible care for Tasmanians.
