New classes for rejuvenated Active Living program

Power pilates classes, dance cardio sessions and a military inspired workout are among new additions to the Council’s rejuvenated Active Living Program.

Returning on Monday 17 January, the new Active Living program aims to get people moving with 18 different fun, friendly and free fitness sessions.

The outdoor exercise space along the Esplanade will host eight of the sessions, with the remaining classes spread across Cairns suburbs, including Edmonton, Gordonvale, Trinity Beach, Edge Hill, Manunda, and Brinsmead.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the new program focused on mental health and wellbeing, and also reflected community interests and instructor availability.

“Like any program, you need to constantly review and adapt in order to meet the demands of the community,” Cr Manning said.

“We wanted to provide more variety and opportunities for people to try something new, while ensuring we delivered a good mix of activities so everyone can find something of interest.

“The Active Living program is part of Council’s strategy to build community wellbeing – incorporating physical activity combined with social interaction that promotes healthy lifestyle and boosts self-confidence.”

New classes include Military Tropik Fitness, Dance Cardio, Power Pilates, and Resistance Training for Metabolic Fitness.

Old favourites such as Zumba and Aqua Zumba, Qigong, Seniors Fitness, Beach Volleyball and Bouldering remain on the program.

Cr Manning said the qualified instructors delivering the free community sessions were professionals with extensive experience.

“Their professional approach is to modify sessions to accommodate all ages, all abilities and ensure inclusiveness for everyone,’ Cr Manning said.
