Join the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Manager Indigenous Programs Matt Poll at the official launch and floor talk for Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands) artist Alick Tipoti’s exhibition Mariw Minaral (Spiritual Patterns) at Pinnacles Gallery today.
Speaking to the Australian National Maritime Museum, Mr Tipoti said his work was about preserving history for future generations.
“My art is all about telling and illustrating the stories my father told me. The one thing I will never do is let my forefather’s words be lost,” he said.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said she was looking forward to attending the launch this evening.
“Alick’s work is incredibly meaningful and important, regenerating cultural knowledge for generations to come,” Cr Greaney said.
“I’m very pleased that Council has been able to work with the Australian National Maritime Museum to bring this special collection of award-winning sculptural works and linocut prints to Pinnacles Gallery for our residents and visitors to enjoy for free.
“Pinnacles Gallery is regarded as a world-class visual arts facility and we’re proud to bring world-class exhibitions like Mariw Minaral (Spiritual Patterns) to this fantastic space.”
The Mariw Minaral (Spiritual Patterns) floor talk starts at 5:30pm and will be presented by Matt Poll, Manager Indigenous Programs at the Australian National Maritime Museum. The launch will start at 6pm, with speeches at 6:30pm.
