New Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre Step Closer

VIC Premier

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with delivering the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre in Melbourne’s inner north, as the project reaches a major milestone ahead of opening next year.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan today marked the completion of the building’s frame with a topping out ceremony as it reaches its highest point, paving the way for the fit out.

The project forms part of the Labor Government’s vision for the Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct to create diverse and affordable homes, a vertical senior high school, open space, and a multi-use vertical community sports centre.

The site will include around 1,200 much needed homes, including a minimum of 20 per cent affordable housing at this iconic site in inner Melbourne, close to jobs, transport and services.

The sports centre will have four multi-purpose courts for basketball and netball, a multi-purpose court for futsal, a gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, unisex change rooms, a foyer and reception area.

The Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre is being constructed by Built Environs on the Fitzroy Gasworks site, generating about 150 jobs.

The new community sports centre has been designed to integrate with the two indoor sports courts of the Wurun Senior Campus to enable shared use and create a seven-court facility outside of school hours.

The vertical design of the centre is in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas – providing room for a range of local sports clubs including the Collingwood Basketball Association. This will be Australia’s first vertical community sports centre.

The project is part of a $49.5 million investment by the Labor Government. For more information visit development.vic.gov.au/projects/fitzroy-gasworks.
