New Food Waste Rules For Local Businesses

Shellharbour City Council is helping raise awareness of new NSW Government requirements that will change how some businesses manage food waste.

The changes will require eligible businesses to separate food waste from general waste, helping reduce what goes to landfill and recover more valuable resources.

To support the rollout, Council has launched a dedicated webpage on the Shellharbour Waste website. The page explains the new requirements and links to detailed guidance from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA).

Mayor Chris Homer said the changes are an important step towards reducing waste across the community.

“Food waste makes up a large portion of what goes to landfill, and separating it can make a real difference,” Mayor Homer said.

“Council’s role is to support local businesses and our community to understand what’s changing and where to find the right information.”

The webpage outlines which businesses may be affected, what they need to do and where to get more support.

Council’s Waste team is also working directly with local businesses to provide targeted information to help them prepare.
