New lanes open as Sippy Downs Drive nears completion

Road users are set to experience a new section of Sippy Downs Drive, with the $12.2 million fourth and final stage of the upgrade on track to be delivered by the end of 2019.

From mid-September the new, two-lane section of road between the Sunshine Motorway and Siena Catholic College will open (one lane in each direction) while the existing two lanes are upgraded on the opposite side.

Once complete, the upgrade will provide four traffic lanes (two on each side), a signalised intersection (replacing the roundabout) at the intersection with University Way, street lighting and landscaping.

Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said he was excited to see construction nearing completion.

“The Sippy Downs Drive Upgrade is a key council project and I thank the community for its patience to date,” Cr Dickson said.

“We are in the final few months of construction and the upgrade will help improve the traffic flow and make navigating this essential transport corridor easier, especially during peak school drop-offs and pick-ups.

“Council has partnered with University of the Sunshine Coast students and the local community to create a stunning entry statement set to be unveiled in early 2020.

“It will be located at the corner of Sippy Downs Drive and University Way and will define the gateway to Sippy Downs and the town centre precinct.”

Cr Dickson urged road users to be mindful of changed traffic conditions when travelling in the area.

Stages one ($7.2 million), two ($500,000) and three ($3.2 million) works included moving the power underground, Sippy Downs Drive changing from a single-lane carriageway to dual-lane carriageway, landscaping, installing traffic signals at major intersections, constructing new pedestrian footpaths and street lighting, as well as delivering an upgraded link from Claymore Road through to Stringybark Road and Siena Catholic College.
