New legume and agronomic guidelines available for producers in Southern WA

Agronomic guidelines have been developed for the new legume species ‘tedera’, which is now available to producers in Southern Western Australia (WA).

Tedera has been trialled extensively in southern areas of WA and could also be suitable for similar Mediterranean-style climates in other parts of Australia. To help producers who are interested in this new pasture species, agronomic guidelines have been compiled into a new fact sheet released by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).

MLA Project Manager, Sustainable Feedbase Resources, Felice Driver, said that the fact sheet was a great starting point for producers interested in tedera.

“Tedera has been the subject of extensive research investment over the years, particularly through the West Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development,” Ms Driver said. “This includes the development of the variety Lanza® by the DPIRD as part of the Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre.

“With this new fact sheet, producers can learn the factors to consider when assessing whether tedera is right for their farm, such as rainfall, temperature, soil type and fertility.

“It also dives into key planting considerations such as inoculating the seed for the best germination, sowing time and depth, and row spacing. There’s also an abundance of information on effective grazing and the nutritional value of tedera.”

Ms Driver said the information sheet would be followed by a more detailed manual for growing tedera. This manual is currently in development and will be available later this year.

Access the information sheet within the MLA legumes hub.

Lanza® tedera seed is available through Seednet.
