Southern Midlands sports fans now have access to upgraded change rooms at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Ground thanks to Government funding that improves facilities for all participants.
Today, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, joined representatives of AFL Tasmania, the Southern Midlands Council and local sports clubs to mark the opening of the new facilities.
“The original facilities were built in 1972 and were desperately in need of work to bring them up to acceptable, modern standards,” he said.
“This project is a great asset for the Southern Midlands region and will encourage more locals to take up or continue with sport, with the new change rooms meeting accessibility and universal design principles.
“Upgrades to player facilities that ensure all current and future participants feel safe and comfortable in their environments is a key part of being able to attract new players and keep them playing.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government is sticking to our long-term plan and doing what matters for all Tasmanians. By funding projects like this, we are ensuring more Tasmanians, regardless of their age or background, get active and have somewhere to compete, play and connect with others in their community.”
The Government invested $200,000 into the $280,000 project through our Improving the Playing Field Grant Program, with AFL Tasmania contributing a further $34,000 and the remaining project costs covered by the Southern Midlands Council, Mount Pleasant Football and Cricket clubs and other sponsors.
The Improving the Playing Field Grants Program provided $15 million over two years to projects that upgrade or improve sporting facilities throughout the State. The new $10 million Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Program is currently open for applications.
