The Andrews Labor Government will create new links to Beechworth’s much-loved Lake Sambell, encouraging locals and visitors to explore the area by walking or riding a bike.
New walking and cycling pathways will be built between Beechworth Primary School and the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail at Lake Sambell thanks to more than $50,000 in funding as part of the Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program (FLTSP).
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the investment would help create new connections to the site, which has been identified as a missing gap in the town’s active transport network. Indigo Shire Council will also contribute $51,075 towards the paths.
The new pathways will connect with the existing footpaths at the local primary school, improving access to school for students and their families by creating a safer walking and bike riding corridor.
The new, smoother surfaces will also ensure people of all capabilities can access the area, removing the need to travel via grassed or gravel-covered surfaces or on-road paths.
The FLTSP provides funding to local government and community organisations for small-scale transport projects, evidence-based transport studies, and funding to redesign and trial new ways in which transport services at a local level can be delivered across the state.
