New performing arts centre takes centre stage at Melville SHS

  • ​Multimillion dollar performing arts centre unveiled at Melville Senior High School

  • Students at Melville Senior High School will explore their creative and artistic talents in a brand new industry-standard performing arts centre officially opened today.

    Unveiled by Premier Mark McGowan, Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery and Bicton MLA Lisa O’Malley, the $4.5 million facility features two connected spaces for music, drama and dance which both have sprung floors and a movable wall.

    A key McGowan Government election commitment, the state-of-the-art building also has a green room, foyer, gallery space and retractable seating for 300 people attending concerts, plays or awards ceremonies as well as year group assemblies, primary school graduations and professional lectures for staff.

    More than 1,400 students are attending Melville Senior High School this year including 485 students in the performing arts program.

    Designed by Cox Architecture and built by EMCO Building, the visually striking centre is set to become an iconic building seen by thousands every day as they drive along Leach Highway.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “This is a stunning building and performance space for students to express their creative talents and showcase their work.

    “An industry standard performing arts centre gives students the opportunity to learn and grow in brand new and professional surroundings.

    “This building supported local jobs during construction and, now it’s open, will prepare our talented students for the performing arts jobs of the future.”

    As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

    “Students at Melville Senior High School will thrive with this incredible arts centre and I know it will help the school develop its excellent dance and drama programs further.

    “Parents and the community now have the chance attend student productions in a large space and see these talented young people excel and perform on a state-of-the-art stage.”

    As stated by Bicton MLA Lisa O’Malley:

    “Melville Senior High School has so many talented students and now they have the opportunity to shine centre stage in this state-of-the-art brand new facility.

    “I am proud to have delivered on one of my key election commitments which will benefit Melville SHS students for many generations to come.”
