New recruits bring wealth of policing experience to Queensland

Twelve new officers, all with previous interstate or overseas policing experience, have celebrated the start of their new careers in the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The state’s newest First Year Constables (FYC) were inducted into the Service after successfully completing the 17-week Police Abridged Competency Education (PACE) program at the QPS Academy in Brisbane.

For these new FYCS, training has created opportunities to build camaraderie and share policing career experiences with their classmates. They look forward to connecting with the community to help people and put the additional knowledge and skills they have gained into practice.

The graduating officers come to QPS from policing jurisdictions, including Northern Territory, Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Australian Federal Police, and New Zealand. They bring a wealth of experience in frontline policing, plus relevant studies in criminology, psychology, public safety policing and education.

These graduates will now be deployed across the state from the South Eastern region to the Far North.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Kelly said the newest officers will bring valuable skills to the QPS with their prior policing experience.

“Welcoming these officers into our ranks is an asset to QPS as they will utilise the skills and training they have gained throughout their policing careers,” Assistant Commissioner Mark Kelly said.

“The PACE program allows officers to expand on their existing knowledge and experience through an abridged training course, equipping them to serve the Queensland community.

“Right now we are offering very attractive incentives for our interstate and international colleagues to make the move and enjoy a rewarding policing career here in Queensland.

“For some of our newest graduates the financial incentives have made moving closer to family possible, while for others it has allowed a change of lifestyle whilst continuing to pursue their career in policing.

Incentives announced earlier this year include a $20,000 relocation allowance for eligible applicants with previous non-QPS policing experience. This financial support transforms the prospect of relocating to Queensland from a mere dream into an attainable reality – a game changer, especially amidst rising living costs.
