New report shows depth of housing crisis

Tasmanian Labor

Yet another report highlighting the depth of Tasmania’s housing crisis is a damning indictment of successive Liberal Governments’ failure to deliver the basics for Tasmanians.

The ANZ Core Logic Housing Affordability report released today again showed Hobart has the least affordable rents in the country, with regional Tasmania not far behind.

The report also found it would now take the average person 11.4 years to save a 20 per cent house deposit in Hobart – up from seven years when the Liberals were elected.

The situation is not much better outside Hobart, where the average person would have to save for 9.5 years for a house deposit – up from just 4.5 years when the Liberals formed government.

While successive failed Housing Ministers have promised action, they have all consistently failed to deliver – leaving us with a crisis at every level of the state’s housing system.

As private sale and rent prices blow through the roof and are out of reach for most Tasmanians, more and more are being pushed into homelessness and more families risk losing the roof over their heads.

The March housing dashboard shows there are still nearly 4,500 people on the waiting list and that the average wait time for priority applicants has increased to a massive 64 weeks, up from 62.6 weeks in February.

Tasmanians deserve better from their government. The Rockliff-Ferguson Government is continuing the Liberal legacy of failing to deliver the basics for Tasmanians.
