New research explores different restorative justice approaches to sexual violence

The Australian Institute of Criminology has published new research on restorative justice approaches to sexual violence.

• The research draws on interviews with 35 stakeholders across the justice, education, community and institutional sectors, and focuses on restorative justice for sexual violence in the ACT.
• Findings show that, while there has been low uptake of the ACT’s restorative justice scheme for sexual violence, there is substantial interest in alternative pathways outside of formal legal processes for sexual violence, and several community-based approaches have emerged.
• Findings point to the value of having multiple restorative justice pathways within and outside of the criminal justice system working alongside, and complementing, one another to meet different needs and operate at different stages of victim-survivors’ journeys.
