New round of youth grants awarded in the NT to help minimise alcohol and other drug harms

Fifteen new locally led activities will receive funding as part of the Northern Territory 2023 – 2024 Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Youth Grants Program.

The program aims to minimise harm associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through a range of prevention, education and community action initiatives.

A total of $270,000 has been awarded for community projects or initiatives aimed at providing comprehensive support for young people across the Territory, including:

The Hub of Respect Inc in Central Australia will run an eight week preventative intervention program with middle school students;Cancer Council NT will run vaping educational programs across the Big Rivers and Central Australia regions;Victoria Daly Regional Council will run AFL and basketball training in Timber Creek and Kalkarindji, focusing on reducing tobacco and vaping use within community; Tennant Creek High School will run two programs for students related to making healthy choices; and the Young Professionals Northern Territory Inc will provide peer-to-peer support for young people gaining their driving licence and learn the impacts of alcohol and drugs on driving ability.

This year is the eighth round of the NT AOD Youth Grants Program. To date, approximately $1.83 million has been provided, supporting 125 projects to help minimise harm associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs across the Territory.
