The small steam train that operates along the foreshore is a much-loved attraction operated by volunteers from the National Railway Museum and supported by the City of PAE. The train stops regularly at Semaphore foreshore station to pick up passengers.
This structure has deteriorated over many years due to a number of issues including its location next to the salty ocean. The design of the current structure also causes a number of safety and cost issues for maintenance, mainly due to the shape of the roof, meaning it cannot be repaired. We have been working with the National Railway Museum to design a replacement structure as this is by far the most cost effective and beneficial solution.
The design of the replacement structure is similar to the existing train station, fits in with the surrounding area and is in sympathy with nearby pitched roof structures. Importantly, the new train station structure will be simpler, more practical, better suited to the conditions and with greatly reduced maintenance costs. The iconic “Semaphore” sign will be retained and fitted to the new structure.
Originally scheduled for late February, this work will now be undertaken 28 April until 15 May 2020, which falls outside of the regular operating season of the train due.
