New strategy to set WA’s climate adaptation agenda

  • Climate Resilient WA directions paper builds on targeted consultation this year
  • The Climate Adaptation Strategy will be released in 2023
  • Adaptation is a key factor in McGowan Government’s response to climate change

The McGowan Government is taking strong action to combat climate change, in preparing a new adaptation strategy to be released next year.

The Climate Resilient WA directions paper lays the foundations for the State-wide strategy, building on targeted consultation with Government and peak industry bodies, as well as Aboriginal and environmental groups.

It will guide adaption for years to come, and will include initiatives to improve knowledge, capability, and partnerships to enhance the resilience of industries, cities, and regions.

The McGowan Government is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The Western Australian Government aims to show good leadership by cutting its own emissions by 80 percent below 2020 levels by 2030.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change recognises that adaptation is a global challenge, with widespread risks across industries, sectors, and governments.

Adaptation is a key component of the long-term response to protect communities, livelihoods, and ecosystems. This document identifies four directions to accelerate immediate action, supporting a comprehensive, long-term approach to climate risks, resilience, and adaptation:

  1. Produce and communicate credible climate information
  2. Build public sector climate capability and strengthen accountability
  3. Enhance sector-wide and community partnerships to unite and coordinate action
  4. Empower and support the climate resilience of Aboriginal people

These directions are the result of analysis of action underway internationally and across Australia, and respond to targeted consultation. To read Climate Resilient WA – Directions for the State’s Climate Adaptation Strategy, visit:

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

“It is essential we build our State’s climate resilience – and adaptation is critical to tackling the climate crisis on a global scale.

“This strategy will guide climate adaptation action for years to come. It will shape sector-specific initiatives that improve knowledge, capability, and partnerships – enhancing resilience across our economy.

“We’re taking a sensible approach to protect the WA economy, while mapping out credible pathways to reduce our emissions.”
