New technology delivering instant life-saving health records to ambos

SA Gov

Australian MedicAlert Foundation (MedicAlert) has collaborated with SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) to launch a new QR Code service – worn on medical IDs such as bracelets or necklaces – to provide health professionals with instant access to a patient’s critical medical information.

The new QR Code service means that in an emergency, ambos and other health professionals can get immediate access to information such as a patient’s age, medical conditions, allergies, medication, special devices, emergency contacts and specialised care instructions

The QR Code service is a significant advancement on MedicAlert’s existing medical ID bracelets and necklaces, which have some patient details and medical information engraved on specially worn IDs

The new QR Code service allows more detailed and extensive medical information to be accessed instantly in emergencies when every second counts to save lives.

MedicAlert’s QR Code service is the only Australian medical ID service that has partnered with an ambulance service to determine not just what information is required in emergency situations, but how that information is best relayed to support their critical, time-sensitive work.

The QR Code service is currently rolling out nationally with a strong initial response from both MedicAlert members and ambos during the pilot phase.

Further information on the QR Code service can be found here and here.

This new MedicAlert QR Code service is a valuable new tool to help our ambos save more lives.

It will give health professionals instant access to a patient’s critical medical information during an emergency.

Time matters in an emergency and the sooner our ambos and clinicians can gain access to vital medical information, the better likely outcome for a patient.

As put by SAAS Executive Director for Clinical Service Keith Driscoll

MedicAlert is a trusted brand for our clinicians, so when they see it, they will act on it.

Gaining quick access to medical information is key during the emergency process and provides our clinicians with the information they need to treat their patient.

As put by MedicAlert Chief Executive Officer Chris Radbone

This QR Code service, a digital reimagination of MedicAlert’s market leading service, is available to existing and new members at no additional cost outside of a $1-a-week annual service fee.

Many Australians will be familiar with the iconic MedicAlert medical ID bracelet which has seen MedicAlert become Australia’s most trusted provider of emergency medical information for 52 years. The ID carries essential information that allows members to keep all their critical health information in one place.

With the evolution of health data and technology, we are now introducing a QR Code service that makes essential health information available instantly from anywhere in the world.

This major update to our services provides every MedicAlert member with hidden or chronic health conditions with the ultimate protection via our unique QR technology.
