No Cruise Ships in Botany Bay: Bayside

Bayside Council remains opposed to any cruise terminal in Botany Bay and will write to the State Government to reiterate its opposition to any plans for a cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay or nearby Molineux Point, next to Port Botany.

“The cruise industry is re-starting and the threat of Botany Bay becoming a new port for this growing industry remains strong,” Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.

“A recent study commissioned by Council on the erosion problems along the Bayside foreshore is soon to be released. This study confirms that the biggest contributor to the environmental damage caused to the Bay and the devastating erosion of the beaches was the change in wave action following the development of Port Botany.”

The community cannot tolerate any further degradation of the Bay and surrounds through the construction of massive infrastructure projects.

Council will continue to remind the State Government that a more suitable site in Sydney Harbour needs to be found to accommodate the cruise ship industry.

Council staunchly opposes the Botany Bay cruise terminal proposal for the following reasons:

  • A terminal for mega cruise ships would significantly impact Lady Robinsons Beach to the western side of Botany Bay, from Kyeemagh to Dolls Point and those pristine and protected areas at Towra Point in the Sutherland Shire.
  • Localised roads would be jammed with buses and trucks required to service a cruise ship terminal.
  • Wave patterns created by cruise ships in the bay would also further deteriorate the beach and recreational areas that Council is currently remediating.
  • Residents should not have to pay for ongoing environmental repairs to the foreshore.
