Nominations open for City Councillor role

Nominations are now open for eligible individuals interested in filling the vacancy of Gold Coast Division 4 Councillor following the election of Cameron Caldwell to Federal Parliament.

Because the Office has become vacant with less than 12 months until the next election, the Local Government Act dictates that an expression of interest process must occur promptly with Councillors to then elect their preferred candidate by resolution.

City of Gold Coast CEO Tim Baker said there was a strict criteria that needed to be met.

“We are making the process simple and transparent so that our Council can act quickly and have someone appointed to the role within weeks,” Mr Baker said.

“This will give certainty to the residents of Division 4 and ensure that the Council is able to discharge its duties until March 2024 when the Local Government election is held.”

Individuals who meet the following eligibility criteria can nominate as a candidate. They must:

  • Be an adult Australian citizen
  • Reside within the City of Gold Coast boundaries
  • Be enrolled on an electoral roll in Queensland
  • Not be disqualified from being a Councillor under the Local Government Act 2009
  • Return a fully completed nomination form

Nominees are asked to submit their CV and a short statement of suitability.

Nominations will close at 5pm Tuesday 8 August and Council will consider the matter at a Special Council meeting on Friday 11 August.
