Nominations open for SA Science Excellence Awards

Nominations are now open for the South Australian Science Excellence Awards to recognise the outstanding work of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) researchers, leaders and educators in our State.

Minister for Industry and Skills David Pisoni said the awards recognise and reward individuals and collaborations for ground-breaking research.

“These Awards also celebrate outstanding contributions by educators who inspire and challenge the next generation of STEM professionals in classrooms across South Australia,” he said.

“Now in their 15th year, the Science Excellence Awards are a great opportunity to acknowledge publicly the outstanding work of our state’s leading STEM professionals, whose world-class research and innovative approaches help us to understand and solve global challenges.”

South Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Caroline McMillen said the awards recognise the global standing of our state’s STEM researchers and educators and highlights their contribution towards our health, wellbeing, economy and environment.

“The state’s future prosperity is underpinned by our global STEM capability and capacity built on the attraction and retention of the world’s best creative, original and innovative thinkers,” she said.

“The growth of industries such as Defence, Cyber-Security, Digital, Space and Health in South Australia is based on the deep science and technology expertise present in our great research and education institutions.”

Winner of the 2018 STEM Educator of the Year Tertiary Teaching Award, Dr Justin Chalker said the Awards provide excellent support for undergraduate research and scholarship.

“The SA Science Excellence Awards are a fantastic way to celebrate success in science in the broadest sense,” he said.

“I am a strong proponent of undergraduate research and using this exploratory experience as a medium to teach science.”
