North Shore Youth Hub grand opening

The finishing touches are being put on the North Shore Youth Hub – with the official opening on Friday 30 November.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the $2.3 million project – which includes a skate park, obstacle course, teenage playground and outdoor DJ table – supported 12 local jobs during its construction and delivered on another promise.

“Building a youth hub and skate park in the Northern Suburbs was a commitment I gave to the North Shore community and we are delivering on our promises,” Cr Hill said.

“Through providing state-of-the-art spaces for our kids we can also boost our economy and provide jobs for locals.

“My team of Councillors is totally committed to investing in new parks and open spaces right across our community – especially in growth areas such as the Northern suburbs.”

Cr Hill said the Youth Hub was another example of Council’s record infrastructure spend of $433 million this financial year delivering first class community infrastructure and local jobs.

“JMac Constructions was awarded a $1.2 million contract to build the Youth Hub which has supported a dozen local jobs,” Cr Hill said.

The $2.3 million project received $460,000 from the State Government’s Works for Queensland Program and $250,000 from Stockland.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said since its creation the $600 million Works for Queensland program had supported almost 1,000 local jobs in Townsville across 79 projects worth $45 million.

“The North Shore Youth Hub is a fantastic demonstration of what Works for Queensland is doing for Townsville families and locals,” he said.

“I want to congratulate Mayor Jenny Hill and Townsville City Council on a job well done for the people of Townsville.

“This is going to be a fantastic new facility for the local community, delivered through a program that supports jobs and helps to boost the local economy.”

Cr Hill said there will be plenty of free activities at the official opening on Friday night.

“We will have the DJ table fired up, fire twirlers, skateboarding competitions and workshops that kids can enjoy for free,” Cr Hill said.

The event runs from 5-8pm on 30 November at the corner of North Shore Blvd and Erskine Pl.
