Novavax now available for eligible Western Australians

Monday, February 21, 2022

Western Australians have access to a new vaccine in the fight against COVID-19, with the introduction of the Novavax vaccine at State clinics from today, 21 February 2022.

A WA Health spokesperson said that Novavax offered the same protection and benefits of other vaccines in keeping our communities safe and had been demonstrated to be highly effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in adults.

Starting this week at the Kwinana, Mirrabooka and Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) vaccination clinics, Novavax will be offered to walk-in clients for the first week only on the following days and locations:

  • Kwinana – Monday to Wednesday
  • Mirrabooka – Wednesday and Thursday
  • PCEC – Thursday to Sunday.

Following this week bookings will be essential via Roll up for WA website.

Further, from February 28, 2022, Novavax will also be available in the Goldfields region at all State-run clinics and select clinics in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions.

“Bookings will be available and people wishing to take up this opportunity are urged to visit the Roll up for WA website for details on locations and how to book,” the spokesperson said.

“In addition, the Novavax vaccine is available at participating GPs and pharmacies across WA.”

Approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, Novavax is a spike protein-based vaccine, and recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation as a primary course of vaccination in people aged 18 years and older.

Given in two doses with a minimum of three weeks apart, it is however not currently recommended for use as a booster vaccine.

Novavax can be administered as part of a mixed primary course to people who have received one or more doses of another COVID-19 vaccine, including as a third dose for people who are severely immunocompromised.

All other vaccines, including the Pfizer paediatric vaccine are still available at State-run clinics, GPs and pharmacies and people were encouraged to take up those options.

The spokesperson said there were hundreds of vaccination locations across the State and people were asked the visit the Roll up for WA website for details.

“But whatever the vaccination you get – now is the time, to make sure you and your loved ones are protected against the virus,” the spokesperson said.
