NSW kids aiming to break Big Vegie Crunch record

Healthy Kids Association

Healthy Kids Association is encouraging NSW children to eat more vegetables as part of Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch.

Katie Booth, Healthy Kids Association Senior Project Manager and Accredited Practising Dietitian, says that fun, interactive, school-based events – such as Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch – can help increase the variety and amount of vegetables kids eat.

“It is recommended that kids aged 4 to 12 years eat around five serves of vegetables each day for good health now, and into the future” says Ms. Booth. “Events like The Big Vegie Crunch combine fun, education and positive peer influence which can help kids try and enjoy different types of vegies both at school and at home.”

Statistics show that only one in 20 primary school aged children are eating the recommended daily serves of vegetables.

The Big Vegie Crunch 2022 is on track to exceed over 100,000 children from 450 primary schools across NSW taking part in the event, all eating vegetables at the same time and aiming to break the Crunch record.

Vegetable Week 2022 runs from Monday 28 March to Friday 1 April, with The Big Vegie Crunch to be held at 10am on Thursday 31 March.

Vegetable Week, featuring the The Big Vegie Crunch, is a free, quick and easy school-based event for NSW primary schools, funded by NSW Health. Making healthy eating fun can help children learn about vegetables and build positive eating habits for the whole family.
