A man has been charged after a police officer was injured during an incident at Wollongong today.
About 12.30pm (Friday 3 July 2020), police were called to a motel on Crown Street, Wollongong, after reports of a man acting aggressively and refusing to leave after being asked by staff.
Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and spoke with the man, advising him to leave the motel.
After initially refusing, it’s alleged the man became aggressive towards police and as a male senior constable picked up his bag, the man grabbed hold of a knife in the bag and attempted to push the officer away.
The officer kept hold of the knife and during a short struggle with the man, sustained a cut to his hand.
The 46-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station.
He was charged with remain on inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse, intimidate police officer in execution of duty, armed with intent commit indictable offence, and assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.
The man was also charged with excluded person re-enter premises in relation to an incident at a Wollongong liquor store on Friday 12 June 2020.
He has been refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 4 July 2020).
The senior constable was treated for minor injuries at Wollongong Hospital and has since been released.
