NSW police charge man after ongoing investigation into kidnappings and extortions

Detectives have charged a man with perverting the course of justice as part of an ongoing investigation into several alleged extortions and kidnappings.

Last year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Shaughnessy to investigate the activities of a criminal syndicate operating across Sydney.

During the investigation police received information about an alleged kidnap for ransom of a 36-year-old man at The Boulevard, Lakemba, about 9am on Thursday 25 July 2019.

The man was taken to an unknown location and repeatedly assaulted before being taken back at Lakemba.

Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives arrested a 65-year-old man at St George Police Station about 9.15am on Friday 5 June 2020.

The Peakhurst man was charged with do act intending to pervert the course of justice.

Police will allege that the man threatened another man in an attempt to change a police statement in relation to a kidnap for ransom.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Tuesday 25 August 2020).

Investigations under Strike Force Shaughnessy are continuing.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Shaughnessy investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
