A man has been charged following an alleged carjacking in Deniliquin last month.
About 8.30pm on Monday 24 June 2019, a 17-year-old girl was in a Holden Commodore parked in the driveway of a Deniliquin home, whilst she spoke on the phone.
A man approached the vehicle before opening the driver’s door and repeatedly punching the teen in the face and head. She was dragged out before the man drove off in the vehicle.
The teen was taken to Deniliquin Hospital where she required treatment for facial injuries sustained in the incident. She has since been released.
Officers from Murray River Police District attended and commenced inquiries.
Police have been told by witnesses, the Holden Commodore was seen heading south east on Hay Road about 9.30pm. The vehicle crossed on to the incorrect road and collided with a tree, causing it to roll.
The driver attempted to flee on foot and was detained by witnesses.
The 22-year-old man was treated by paramedics before being taken to Deniliquin Hospital under police guard. He received treatment for injuries sustained as a result of the crash and also underwent assessment.
Upon being released yesterday (Wednesday 3 July), the man was taken to Albury Police Station and charged with aggravated assault with intent to take and drive motor vehicle (aggravated carjacking) and drive motor vehicle while disqualified.
The man was refused bail and will appear before Albury Local Court today (Thursday 4 July).
