NSW police charge men after fireworks cause fire at Guildford

Two men have been charged after allegedly setting off fireworks that caused a grassfire in Sydney’s west yesterday.

About 2.40pm (Sunday 22 December 2019), police were called to Bright Park, Guildford, after reports of several loud explosions.

Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command entered the park and saw fireworks exploding and several small grassfires, which spread rapidly in sudden winds.

The NSW Rural Fire Service attended and extinguished the fires.

Following investigations, two men, aged 18, were arrested at a fast food restaurant in Merrylands and taken to Granville Police Station.

One of the men was charged with negligent handling of explosives, passenger not disclose driver’s identity, and custody of a knife in a public place. The second man was also charged with negligent handling of explosives, as well as driver not disclose identity of driver.

The men were granted bail and are due to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Monday 7 January 2020.
