NSW police charge two over staged vehicle theft and attempted fraud

A man and a woman will face court this week after being charged over their involvement in an alleged conspiracy to stage the theft of a vehicle and lodge a fraudulent insurance claim.

In July 2018, detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad and Organised Crime Squad established Strike Force Mercury to investigate the coordinated fraudulent activities targeting family day care operations.

During the course of the investigation, strike force detectives received information about a conspiracy to stage the theft of a motor vehicle and fraudulently lodge a comprehensive motor vehicle insurance claim.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 33-year-old woman at a home at Bass Hill about 6.45am on Wednesday 18 December 2019.

Shortly after, detectives arrested a 49-year-old man at a home at Punchbowl.

They were both taken to local police stations and charged with charged with conspire with other to cheat and defraud and publish false misleading material to obtain advantage.

Police will allege in court that the man and the woman were involved in staging the theft of a Toyota Kluger, and knowingly lodged a fraudulent insurance claim valued at $8800 in December 2018.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Tuesday 21 January 2019).

The woman was granted conditional bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 22 January 2019).
