NSW police lay charges after firearm seized from vehicle at Lake Illawarra

Police have charged a man after a firearm and ammunition were located inside a vehicle in the state’s Illawarra region yesterday.

About 6pm on Wednesday (12 January 2022), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District were patrolling the Unanderra area, when they approached the driver of a Toyota Hiace in the carpark of a fast-food restaurant along the Princes Highway.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police seized a .22 calibre revolver in a brown paper bag behind the driver’s seat, as well as ammunition.

The driver – a 31-year-old man – and passenger – a 24-year-old man – were arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The older man was charged with possess unauthorised pistol, possess unregistered firearm – pistol, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

The Wollongong was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 13 January 2022).

The younger man was released pending further inquiries.
