NSW police lay charges after two hit by car at Tamworth

Police have charged a man after two pedestrians were hit by a car at Tamworth at the weekend.

About 11.30pm on Saturday (8 January 2022), emergency services were called to Manilla Road at Oxley Vale, following reports two pedestrians – a 27-year-old man and 28-year-old woman – had been hit by a Toyota Echo sedan.

The driver allegedly failed to stop and render assistance.

The man suffered head injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, where he remains.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and located the car abandoned at Alexandra Street.

A crime scene was established and examined by local police, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU).

A short time later, police arrested a 37-year-old man nearby.

He was taken to Tamworth Regional Referral Hospital for mandatory testing, before being taken to Tamworth Police Station.

The Narrabri man has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive under the influence, cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle, and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.

He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Tamworth Local Court today (Monday 10 January 2022).
