NT Covid Update: Sydney Airport and Canberra Airport Hotspots Revoked

The Chief Health Officer has revoked the Sydney Domestic Airport and Canberra Airport hotspots for the purposes of travel to the Northern Territory and replaced this with a testing direction, effective at 6.00pm today, 1 September 2021.

Anyone currently in mandatory supervised quarantine who had transited through Sydney Domestic Airport or Canberra Airport only is able to exit at this time.

The Chief Health Officer is directing anyone who transits through the Sydney Airport or Canberra Airport after 6.00pm on 1 September 2021 to self-isolate, get tested and remain in isolation until a negative test is returned. This is part of a step-down approach to ensure the Territory remains protected from COVID-19.

Strict border controls are in place for all people travelling to the NT from a declared hotspot or public exposure site. The border controls prohibit entry into the NT unless you are a returning resident, or have obtained prior approval to enter.

NSW and the ACT remain a declared hotspot for the purposes of travel to the NT. Those people with an approved exemption to travel, who have been in a declared hotspot, are required to undertake 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine at the Alice Springs or Howard Springs quarantine facilities.

As a reminder, the Chief Health Officer also requires those people who have undertaken quarantine interstate to get a Day Three COVID-19 test after arriving in the Northern Territory. Those people are required to enter into supervised mandatory quarantine upon arrival into the Northern Territory and remain there until a negative test is returned.

The risk of COVID-19 in our communities cannot be eliminated which is why it is important for everyone to follow all health directions.

Quotes attributable to Chief Health Officer Dr Hugh Heggie:

“We remain deeply concerned about the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in NSW the ACT. These regions will continue to remain hotspots.

“For those transiting through Sydney and Canberra Airports ONLY, the hotspot has been lifted. However, as an added precaution, we have introduced an isolate and test direction for those people entering the NT to ensure an ongoing layer of protection.

“I encourage all eligible Territorians to roll up their sleeves and get the COVID-19 vaccine. Don’t wait until tomorrow, make sure you book today.”
