NT Police encourage Territorians to enjoy easing of COVID-19 restrictions, but urge community to follow advice

NT Police are looking forward to seeing businesses reopen and staff with smiles on their faces as pubs and restaurants open their doors from midday tomorrow.

Physical distancing remains one of the key weapons in the fight against the COVID-19 virus and venues have worked hard on plans to welcome patrons and ensure high levels of hygiene.

Police will have a visible presence across the Territory to ensure everyone is enjoying themselves safely.

The behaviour reported in Litchfield National Park last weekend was obnoxious, rude and selfish.

Police and rangers will be conducting checks throughout the park this weekend and expect people to treat them and fellow visitors with respect.

Reducing road related harm is still a key priority for NT Police and with the further relaxing of restrictions from tomorrow, there will be an increase in Random Breath Testing and Random Drug Testing activities to ensure a safer Northern Territory.

Commissioner Jamie Chalker said, “Police will be conducting high visibility patrols throughout the weekend. With the reopening of licensed premises, our approach will be to make sure Territorians don’t drink and drive. If you plan to head out, make your plans to get home safely.

“Additionally, police will be present out at Litchfield to make sure Territorians are on their best behaviour. We want it to be a place that people want to take their families and we will certainly be addressing any untoward behaviour.

“We have got ourselves an incredibly rare and privileged position in the Territory that we are able to get back to some sense of normality. Going into this weekend, I urge Territorians to work together and continue their efforts in adhering to the COVID-19 restrictions that remain in place.”
